چکیده

We measure the two–point redshift–space correlation function of loose groups of galaxies, ξGG(s) , for the combined CfA2 and SSRS2 surveys. Our combined group catalog constitutes the largest homogeneous sample available (885 groups). We compare ξGG(s) with the correlation function of galaxies, ξgg(s) , in the same volume. We find that groups are significantly more clustered than galaxies: < ξGG/ξgg > =1.64± 0.16. A similar result holds when we analyze a volume–limited sample (distance limit 78 h Mpc) of 139 groups. For these groups, with median velocity dispersion σv ∼ 200 km s −1 and mean group separation d ∼ 16 h Mpc, we find that the correlation length is s0 = 8±1 h −1 Mpc, which is significantly smaller than that found for rich clusters. We conclude that clustering properties of loose groups of galaxies are intermediate between galaxies and rich clusters. Moreover, we find evidence that group clustering depends on physical properties of groups: correlation strengthens for increasing σv.

The Power Spectrum of Galaxies in the Nearby Universe1

We compute the power spectrum of galaxy density uctuations in a recently completed redshift survey of optically-selected galaxies in the southern hemisphere (SSRS2). The amplitude and shape of the SSRS2 power spectrum are consistent with results of the Center for Astrophysics redshift survey of the northern hemisphere (CfA2), including the abrupt change of slope on a scale of 30 50h 1Mpc; these...

Pairwise Velocities of Galaxies in the Cfa and Ssrs2 Redshift Surveys

We combine the CfA Redshift Survey (CfA2) and the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2) to estimate the pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies 12 on a scale of 1h 1Mpc. Both surveys are complete to an apparent magnitude limit B(0) = 15:5. Our sample includes 12,812 galaxies distributed in a volume 1:8 106 h 3Mpc3. We conclude: 1) The pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies in the combined CfA...

Table 1. Correlation function parameters, semi-volume limited samples. Sample s0 γs σ8 r0 γr σ8

We use the two-point correlation function to calculate the clustering properties of the recently completed SSRS2 survey, which probes two well separated regions of the sky, allowing one to evaluate the sensitivity of sample-to-sample variations. Taking advantage of the large number of galaxies in the combined sample, we also investigate the dependence of clustering on the internal properties of...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Group analysis in the SSRS 2 catalog

We present an automated method to detect populations of groups in galaxy redshift catalogs. This method uses both analysis of the redshift distribution along lines of sight in fixed cells to detect elementary structures and a friend-of-friend algorithm to merge these elementary structures into physical structures. We apply this method to the SSRS2 galaxy redshift catalog. The groups detected wi...

The UZC-SSRS2 Group Catalog

We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm to the combined UZC and SSRS2 redshift surveys to construct a catalog of 1168 groups of galaxies; 411 of these groups have 5 or more members within the redshift survey. The group catalog covers 4.69 steradians and all groups exceed the number density contrast threshold, δρ/ρ = 80. We demonstrate that the groups catalog is homogeneous across the two underl...
